Fitting Hockey Gloves

By Tyler Hinds, envious of players with silky mitts (@THinds3)

A good pair of hockey gloves will do three things:

  1. Offer excellent hand protection
  2. Give the player great feel on their stick
  3. Give the player great style

Below is the buyer's guide to purchasing a new set of mitts.

Key Points

ProTip - Bring your current stick and elbow pads with you when buying new gloves so the stick feels comfortable in your hands and you have enough wrist mobility.

  • Fingers – there should be approximately half a centimeter of spare room between the end of your fingers and the end of the glove
    • If your fingers are jammed at the end, try the next size up
    • If there’s too much room at the end, try the next size down
  • Length – make sure the cuff of the glove reaches the base of your elbow pad
    • If there’s too much a gap, try the next size up so you avoid painful slashes
    • If there’s too much overlap, try the next size down so you don’t lose wrist mobility
  • Feel – this is where you grab your stick and confirm that you will still have the same puck control and feel that you had with your previous set of mitts
    • If something doesn’t feel right, try one of the different style of fits listed below.

Style

1. Anatomical Fit

  • Designed specifically to fit very tight on the hand and wrist for maximum feel and great control over your stick

2. Tapered Fit

  • Similar fit to the anatomical where the glove is very snug around the hand but has a flared cuff for more wrist mobility

3. Four Roll Fit

  • This is the traditional boxy hockey glove where the fit is relatively loose throughout the fingers, hand, and wrist
