Fitting Hockey Pants

By Tyler Hinds, hockey laces also make for great belts (@THinds3

Hockey pants aren't good enough for Batman but they will be more than adequate for you on the ice. Easily the largest piece of equipment in your bag, hockey pants play an integral role protecting an area from your kidneys to your knees. Take some time to review the buyer’s guide to properly fitted hockey pants before you make your next purchase.

Key Points

ProTip - When buying new hockey pants, bring your shin pads and shoulder pads so you know how the equipment aligns together on your body

  • Measurement of the waist, not the hips
    • If they are still loose, invest in a pair of suspenders or use a spare hockey lace as a belt
  • Make sure the length of the pant comes down to the centre of the knee cap
    • Drop down on your knees wearing both the pants and shins pads and stand tall. This test is to make sure that there is hardly any gap between the hockey pants and the shin pads
  • Often overlooked, make sure the kidney collar of the pants are fully covering the organ
  • Make sure that the pad segmentation fits with the player’s body and stride type
    • Thinner pants, less protection but more mobility
    • Thicker pants, less mobility but more protection
  • Girdle Hockey pants fit a little differently where the quad padding, which is much tighter on your legs, does not need to overlap with your shin pads
